Measuring AI Readiness

Before you scale AI, it's worth asking honestly whether your organization is ready. Readiness has four dimensions — and none of them is the model.

The question most organizations ask is “can AI help us?” It's the wrong first question, because the answer is almost always yes. The better question is “are we ready to adopt it without wasting the investment?” That one has a real answer, and it has four parts.

1. Data

Do you have the data the problem needs, and can you trust it? AI amplifies whatever is beneath it — including gaps, bias, and mess. Readiness here isn't about having perfect data; it's about knowing honestly what you have, what it can support, and what it can't yet.

2. Talent and operating model

Who owns AI in your organization, and can your teams work with it rather than around it? The most capable model in the world creates no value if no one is accountable for it and the operating model can't absorb it.

3. Governance

Can you deploy AI you're able to explain, audit, and stand behind? In regulated and high-trust environments, this isn't optional — and readiness means knowing whether your controls can keep pace with what you want to build.

4. Business alignment

Is there a real problem with a measurable outcome behind the initiative — or just enthusiasm? The single biggest predictor of wasted AI spend is starting from the technology instead of the problem it's meant to solve.

AI readiness isn't a technology score. It's an organizational one.

What to do with the answer

A readiness assessment isn't about grading yourself and waiting until every dimension is perfect. It's about knowing where you're strong enough to start and where you'll need to build deliberately as you go. The goal is not to be ready everywhere before you begin — it's to begin where you're ready, and earn the rest.
